An Introduction to Indonesia’s Energy Mix
What is an “Energy Mix?” The Energy Mix is a crucial visual representation of energy targets and expected energy supply from various sources every 25 years. In Indonesia, it was created as per the National Energy Policy Law No. 79/2014. It helps decision-makers develop informed energy policies and investments, creating a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
Currently, Indonesia’s Energy Mix is targeted until the year 2025. The target for 2025 is for Indonesia to produce 40 million or mega tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE) of total energy. This 40 MTOE of total energy is projected to comprise 25% oil, 30% coal, 22% natural gas, and 23% renewables.
The upcoming energy mix is targeted for the year 2050. The goal is to attain a minimum of 1000MTOE of total energy, with a breakdown of 20% from oil, 31% from renewables, 24% from gas, and 25% from coal.
The Energy Mix plays a significant role in achieving the goal of net-zero emissions by 2060. It serves as the foundation for creating new targets and methods to achieve the objective. The mix helps governments and ministries estimate the amount of energy used in different industries. The Energy Mix is based on five core principles, which include higher use of New Renewable Energy (NRE), lower use of fossil energy, use of electric vehicles in the transportation sector, increased use of electricity in residents and industries, and use of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The new targets include no new coal power plants and a carbon tax on vehicles, which further supports the goal of reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.
All in all, renewable energy is the key to a better future. Discovering the effective use of renewable energy is important in developing a sustainable economy and environment in Indonesia.
