Graduating During a Pandemic, SGU Students are Resilient in Passing Challenges
Swiss German University (SGU) is proud to hold the 17th graduation ceremony at the SGU Campus, Prominence Tower, in Alam Sutera, South Tangerang, Saturday (December 12, 2020). Graduation was held for 181 undergraduates and 27 masters from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Faculty of Business Administration & Humanities, and Faculty of Life Sciences & Technology.
The theme for this graduation is “Transforming Digitally and Empowering Globally”. In his speech, the Rector of Swiss-German University, Dr. rer. nat. Filiana Santoso, said along with our vision in transforming digitally and empowering globally, SGU has delivered this nation’s finest graduates for over two decades. They are equipped with the knowledge, experience, and character which are greatly needed in today’s competitive global market.
“We realize that during this pandemic, it is not easy for students to go through the most beautiful moments in life to experience the graduation ceremony properly. Despite all setbacks and obstacles, We all have the right to celebrate and be proud of ourselves today for all faculties, students and parents, “she said.
The graduates are the most special generation among other classes. Most of them were born in 1997/1998, during which time there was a financial crisis, economical and political turbulences in Indonesia. Followed by the beginning of the academic year in SGU, at which time there was a transition to our campus migration, but the students and their parents believe and stay with SGU. The challenge wasn’t only stopped there, even at the end of the academic year, all of the students have to face the Covid 19 pandemic.
“It has made you as the first generation that has to experience how to face the thesis work in an unusual way and lots of limitation, but you choose the pandemic as a motivator to find your purpose. You get to tell the tale of how you surviving those challenges, “said Filiana.
The graduation ceremony also opened with a virtual speech by the Head of Region IV West Java and Banten Higher Education Service Institutions, Prof. Dr. Uman Suherman, AS., M.Pd; the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Indonesia, Dr. Peter Schoof; the Ambassador of Switzerland to Indonesia Kurt Kunz; and Chairman of the Swiss-German University Foundation, Chris Kanter.
The Ambassador of Switzerland to Indonesia, Kurt Kunz, said that Swiss German University has a memorandum of understanding with educational institutions in Switzerland. He would be glad it is just an exercise that would be a gateway to further positive experience with Switzerland and its educational institutions. “Swiss German University wants its students ready for the real world. I am confident it is successful in that mission even under the pandemic,” he said.
The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Indonesia, Dr. Peter Schoof, said that Swiss German University produces many young scientists and engineers. “As many of you, young scientists and engineers, I appear to you use your expertise to conciliate to build a better world, protect our environment, our resources, and our future generation,” he said.
At this graduation ceremony, SGU also announced the best graduate student. The best graduate of the undergraduate program was Clarence Sukmana from the Food Technology Study Program, Faculty of Life Science and Technology with a GPA of 3.96. The best graduate from the Master Program was Setyo Haryadi from the Master of Mechanical Engineering with a GPA of 3.91.
SGU was also awarded the EY Kanter for Distinguished Achievement Award which was won by Samuel Andrew Setiawan from the Biomedical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Life Science and Technology. This award is given to students who are active and excel in college and is known as someone who has a positive character and attitude on and off the campus. SGU is a university that always promotes character development and upholds the balance between academic and non-academic achievement.
