SGU Excursion with Prof. Schirmer, Head of Study Program of Environmental Technology and Development at EAH Jena
The Sustainable Energy and Environment (SEE) Study Program of Swiss German University (SGU) went on an excursion on Java Island from 25th to 30th October 2017. This excursion was led by Dr. Matthias Guenther, Head of Research Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. The occasion was the visit of Prof. Matthias Schirmer, the Head of the study program Environmental Technology and Development at Ernst-Abbe-HochschuleJena (EAH Jena). Some locations on Java were visited that are related to energy research and economy. Besides the two lecturers, SEE students joined a part of the excursion.
The first location visited was the power plant component factory PT Siemens Indonesia in Cilegon, Banten. Dr. Matthias Guenther and Prof. Matthias Schirmer were accompanied by two SEE students, Rachel Radulla and Sabrina Hopf. The visit was led by Mr. Michael Strunk from Siemens Indonesia who showed the factory to the SGU guests and explained them its operation.
The next location was the Geothermal Power Plant Kamojang near Garut, the first Indonesian geothermal plant which started its operation in 1983. The power plant is jointly operated by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy and PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of PT PLN (Persero).
The next day, the team went to Baron Techno Park in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Baron Techno Park is a development and education center for sustainable energy under Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT). It is an experimental platform for sustainable energy solutions containing wind turbines, PV devices, a wave energy converter and a fuel cell. There is a biodiesel generation facility and also a seawater desalination plant. Additionally, the park contains an energy education and information facility.
The excursion was continued with the visit of two locations in West Java, where the lecturers were guided by the energy and environmental consultancy and engineering company PT Entec Indonesia. The first location was the ASEAN Hydropower Competence Center (HYCOM) in Bandung, an international training and dissemination facility for mini hydropower. The second location was the Melong Micro Hydropower Plant (PLTMH Melong, 100 kW), which is operated by Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Teknologi Ketenagalistrikan, Energi Baru, Terbarukan dan Konservasi Energi (P3TKEBTKE) under the Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM).
During the excursion, Dr. Matthias Schirmer and Dr. Matthias Guenther also took their time to climb Mount Merapi and to visit Borobudur Temple. Before the excursion, Prof. Matthias Schirmerhad gave a general lecture about Waste Management Technology for SEE students at SGU Campus. The visit from EAH Jena was a good opportunity to tighten the relationship between the two institutions and between lecturers of the two universities. SGU cooperates with EAH Jena in the areas of Sustainable Energy and Environment, and Business Administration. Both institutions hope to strengthen the cooperation in the future.
